He’s got one of the most important jobs on a cruise ship – keeping everyone happy. So what is life like for a Cruise Director? This week on Leaders of Travel, I speak to Graham Seymour from Royal Caribbean.

This week I’m coming to you from the cruise ship, Explorer of the Seas, which is one of Royal Caribbean’s fleet.

I don’t know if you’ve even been on a cruise – this is my first. And I had so many questions coming on board.

One of the things that I wanted to understand a bit more about is how it works day to day – you know, what you do and how it’s organised so you have things to do.

The public face on a ship in terms of the entertainment and activities is the Cruise Director. On this ship, Explorer of the Seas, Graham Seymour has that job.

People here know who he is – he’s got a TV program that runs on the internal channel every day, he hosts events, he makes announcements. He’s a bit of a celebrity here, to be honest.

But Graham has been doing this for more than 20 years and although he puts on this personable appearance, there are a lot of logistics and a lot of business going on behind the scenes.

I’m sure you’ll be curious to hear what he has to say if you’ve been on a cruise yourself and have seen the Cruise Director role. Or, if not, it’s a great insight into this type of tourism.

So, let’s get to it, and meet Graham Seymour from Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas.

Next episode, we’ll be looking at Florida in the US. In particular, I’ll be talking to one region that has an interesting approach to attracting a segment of the tourism industry you might not think about much – the transgender community.

Until then, my name is Michael Turtle from the travel blog Time Travel Turtle, and you’ve been listening to Leaders of Travel.
